This early championship called the Metropolitano did not allow other provincial teams to join and due to increasing demand, the Argentina soccer association finally created a fully nation-wide competition in 1967, called the Nacional. It would be until 1985 that Argentina soccer would hold this structure, after which the Nacional became the main championship. For several years, the Nacional and Metropolitano championships were played separately. In Argentina, football holds two “seasons” as of 1991, named the Clausura and Apertura (the closing and the opening), and played as two distinct single-round championships. Independiente’s stadium was officially named as “Libertadores de América” in 2005, having been previously known simply as “Estadio de Independiente” or “La Doble Visera de Cemento (The double cement visor”) because of the two roofs overhanging the spectators.
